De Profundis was commissioned by saxophonist Lynn Klock as a vehicle both for his own performance and as a work that would challenge and interest an advanced student. The melodic material and cadenzas in its three movements are drawn from phrases of the Roman Catholic De profundis clamavi chant. The translation, “Out of the depths I cry” seemed appropriate for a baritone saxophone. The styles referenced range from jazz and funk to Schubert songs. Mr. Klock recorded the piece on his Albany Troy CD Connections, and it has since been played by saxophonists around the world.
