Like so much of the chamber music repertoire, the Trio for Alto Saxophone, Horn, and Piano was inspired by my admiration for musical colleagues. Lynn Klock and Laura Klock are exquisite musicians and wonderful human beings. In my Trio, they are represented by individual thematic material that evolves and transforms over the course of the piece, material that is shared and commented on by the piano. The saxophone and horn themes explore and inhabit a series of contrasting dance-like textures, and they emerge at the end of the piece woven into a triumphant duo that soars above the piano’s foundation. The piece opens Lynn Klock’s Albany-Troy CD Intersections.
